Here’s something you might not like to hear:
Improving your watercolor results…
Actual REAL improvement…
is HARD.
Don’t get me wrong, I believe watercolor is the EASIEST, most fun activity out there. IF – you have the right combination of internal and external ingredients.
But most don’t. And they struggle for YEARS.
And guess what? Often learning on your own or from YouTube tutorials just isn’t enough. So what is it that separates artists who breakthrough from those who stay stuck…?

It’s a mentorship.
This might be the best-kept secret in the art world… not because it’s hidden, but because most artists never even consider it.
Historically speaking – 99.99% of artists have had mentors. They were an apprentice to a master.
Every one of the great masters learned directly from someone further along the path. Monet learned from Eugène Boudin. Picasso studied under his father. Almost every successful artist, from classical masters to today’s impressionists like Alvaro Castagnet, has benefited from the guidance, feedback, and inspiration of a mentor.
But somehow, outside of formal art education, apprenticeship has become this “secret” that most self-taught watercolor artists never discover. You probably have never even considered the possibility of getting truly mentored by someone.
Instead you end up struggling alone, wondering why your progress feels so slow, never realizing that the solution is right in front of you.
The real power of getting feedback on your watercolor paintings
When I look back at the past decade or so, the moments of greatest growth often involved someone else’s insights.
One look at my art by Marek, a local artist and teacher here in my area, and he said – “You need to be more humble. You go for incredibly challenging subjects with very little understanding and experience”.
Initially this advice pissed me off. Is he saying my aspirations are too high!?

But that wasn’t the point. It was about painting something simpler, so that my natural, unique style and vision could rise to the surface.
So what’s the real power of accurate feedback?
Accelerated Growth: A mentor quickly finds your blind spots and helps you avoid the mistakes they’ve already made. Instead of wandering in circles for months (or years), you get direct feedback that cuts through the confusion.
Real Watercolor Techniques: There’s a massive difference between watching a technique demonstrated and actually understanding how to apply it in your own work. Mentorship exposes you to the real workflows and decision-making process.
Artistic Breakthroughs: I’ve seen it happen countless times – an artist gets stuck at a certain level, receives targeted feedback, and suddenly makes a leap that surprises even themselves. Sometimes all it takes is someone pointing out the one thing you’ve been missing.
The modern art world: Why learning watercolor online has become essential
Here’s what makes mentorship even more critical today…
The art world has completely transformed, and most artists haven’t caught up. While most beginners focus on “practice” and “improving their techniques”, today’s successful artists are doing something COMPLETELY different.
Yes – fifty years ago, if you were a good painter, you could probably just focus on your craft. You’d develop your watercolor skills, maybe get gallery representation and so on. The path was more straightforward.

And this doesn’t necessarily make me happy, but I have to inform you that that world doesn’t exist anymore.
Today’s successful painters aren’t just painters. They’re more entrepreneurial. They understand that exceptional watercolor painting skills are just the entry ticket – not the whole game.
They’re not just making art – they’re building art businesses.
And you might say “Yeah, but I hate that idea, I just want to make art.”
Very well, you are more than welcome to do just that, while recognizing you want probably attain external success (which many aren’t interested in, and that is totally ok!)
But if you ARE interested in success…
Here’s some of what the modern artist needs to understand:
- How to showcases their process and personality
- The cutting edge of modern attention and where lies
- How to build genuine relationships with their audience
- How to price and sell their work confidently
- How to balance creating art with creating content
- How to develop multiple revenue streams from their artistic skills
That’s a mouthful
And Most artists are out there trying to figure this out alone.
Why you need a modern mentor (not just watercolor painting tips)
This is exactly why mentorship matters now more than ever.
You don’t just need someone who can teach you to paint better – you need someone who understands the full landscape of being an artist in today’s world.

You need a mentor who has actually built a sustainable art business. Someone who creates content, engages with their audience, sells their work, and teaches others.
Someone who understands that artistic excellence and business success aren’t separate things – they’re interconnected parts of the same journey.
If you want it enough, you WILL improve your watercolor paintings
No mentor, no matter how good, can drag you along on the path to success. The same goes for art communities, feedback and so on…
You have to want it.
And you have to want it BADLY. You have to want it so much that neither myself nor anyone else has to inspire you, or push you.
In fact, you need to want it so badly, that even if I spent every day trying to dissuage you from pursuing your art – you STILL will pursue it.
You are all the inspiration you need, and nothing can stop you.
You paint because you’re compelled to. Because if you had all the free time in the world, you’d still paint.
The best way to learn watercolor painting: The apprenticeship model that actually works
Traditional apprenticeship wasn’t just about watching the master work. It was about being part of the process – observing decisions being made in real-time, asking questions when something didn’t make sense etc…
Most importantly, it was ongoing. Not a single workshop or a series of videos you watch once. It was continuous exposure to higher-level thinking and problem-solving.
In today’s world, that kind of sustained mentorship is rare. Most art instruction is one-way: you watch, you try to copy, you’re on your own.
There’s no feedback loop, no adjustment based on your specific needs, no one to catch you when you’re heading down a dead end.
And perhaps more importantly – no one to point out your unique and natural gifts. Everyone has their own sort of “handwriting”, even in painting. It’s what most call a style. And knowing your natural uniqueness and PRESERVING it is of utmost importance.
So when you do find the opportunity for this kind of ongoing mentorship – where someone actually looks at your work, understands EXACTLY where you’re trying to go, and gives you specific guidance – you want to hold on and never let it go.

Why Most Artists Never Find Quality Art Feedback
Most beginners are looking for the right techniques and method that will make everything click.
But breakthrough doesn’t come from a single revelation. It comes from ongoing clarity. Who you are, what you create and what drives you.
It can also come from being part of a community where growth is expected, where everyone is of higher caliber. Because make no mistake – you are the average of the people you surround yourself with.
Surround yourself with beginners, and you’ll stay one. Find highly ambitious painters who happen to be great people – and your path to success is 50% easier.
Wouldn’t it be helpful to only have HALF the challenges you currently face? How much more success could you INSTANTLY attain now that everything is a whole lot easier?
